The Importance of Side Projects
July 31, 2008
Being genuinely and productively busy is one thing that most of the programmers I interviewed for my new book, “Secrets of the Rockstar Programmers: Riding the IT Crest” have in common. Certainly, this state of affairs is something most of the top notch programmers I’ve met have in common, interviewee or not. It’s important to distinguish “productively busy” from just “busy.” Many people are busy, but how much are they actually getting done?
For programmers, the single most important contributor to productive busy-ness is having lots of side projects going on, aside from your main “day job.” For some of the rock stars, the side projects were not related to IT; ranging from fronting a rock-band to coaching kids sports, to photography. These are all great and it happens that many a-list programmers have this sort of stuff going on, but I want to talk about side projects that ARE related to IT.
Let’s take three examples from the book: Dick Wall, Kohsuke Kawaguchi, and Nikhil Kothari.
Dick Wall was working in the IT group at Siemens New Energy in 2002. While it wasn’t the main emphasis of his employment there, he did spend a lot of time staying current on IT trends, and when the idea of podcasting came around, he jumped right on it as a means to share his findings with a wider audience. Through a partnership between Sun and Siemens New Energy, Dick began working with a team of programmers that included the individuals with whom he would eventually form the Java Posse, the most popular Java Technology podcast. Dick’s hobby project eventually became the thing for which he was most widely known, and the thing that helped break him out of Siemens and into an elite team at Google.
Kohsuke Kawaguchi just loves to program, and he loves making users happy. Looking at his homepage kohsuke dot org you see an enormous list of side projects that have various levels of relevance to his day job at Sun. Some of his projects, the Hudson continuous integration engine, for example, are enormously successful and popular. It is this productivity and breadth of side projects that make me consider Kohsuke the most productive programmer I know.
Nikhil Kothari is the leading force behind Microsoft’s ASP dot NET and Silverlight projects and also an avid photographer. But, he’s also one to keep a stable of IT related side projects. One such project, WebMatrix, helped propel Nikhil into is current role of influence at Microsoft. When asked about side projects in the book, Nikhil says, “Invariably, anything I start as a hobby project somehow, in the future, has some element of alignment in the day job. Even if I’m trying to do something that’s completely not aligned, just for the sake of doing it, I somehow end up finding a way to align it. Not necessarily all of the project, but parts of it.”
Of course, not every hobby project will be hugely successful, nor should it be. One of my side projects is to maintain Webclient, a Java API wrapper around the XULRunner browser engine. It has a small set of users and isn’t well supported, but it helps me keep my C++ chops from getting too rusty, as well as being a fun project to play around with.
It’s important to note that my side projects, some of Nikhil’s, and most of Kohsuke’s are done in the open source development style. The rise of open source has made the practice of doing side projects even more career enhancing, because now you can often share your code outside of your current employer, and, more importantly, take it along with you when you change jobs, depending of course on the specifics of your employment contract.
So next time you find yourself looking for a job, if you have a portfolio of hobby projects showing your dedication to the craft, and your programming chops in general, you’ll be ahead of most of the competition!

What is This Thing Called an RSS Feed?
July 31, 2008
In most blogs and websites that you may have visited, you would have noticed a button saying RSS Feed. It’s orange colored icon, present in all websites that involves regular updates. What does that mean? And how can that help you progress in your online business? How does RSS feed work? What do you need to do in order to get one for your website? Let’s try and explore these.
Real Simple Syndication – that’s what RSS stands for. People use RSS feeds to collect and spread information across the World Wide Web. An RSS feeder will list all the updates that you are interested in across the various websites, into one single comprehensive list and you can then easily browse through one single list, pick up your choice and explore that further. Regular updates right at your inbox will help you immensely in channeling the wide range of information that is available on the internet, today.
Say you have a great product to sell – let’s consider it is a software that helps the user compose music on their laptops. Now every time that in a blog or a relevant forum, an user raises a query or concern over digital music recording, then you will get that feed instantly which in turn will help you address the query easily. Thus simply put, you stay up to date.
RSS feed will help you grow and manage a steady traffic of new subscribers and not just a handful of people visiting your page a number of times. You can also add RSS feeds to the main page of all your websites thereby allowing a real time record of activities on your website. Use the pinging service to promote your RSS feed thereby directly connecting it to the search engines which will pick up every update on your website and will display that real time. You can use feeds of other websites or you can use your own RSS feeds depending upon the situation. Your target is to give your audience quality content. When they subscribe to the RSS feed provided by your website, they should not get irrelevant content.
Next allow other sites to add your feed content. This will help in cross-promotion and you will get a wider audience. You can also think of importing RSS feeds from social networking sites like Facebook or Myspace.
A large leadership on record will also help you generate good advertising revenue from your website. Tracking the organic traffic to your website is of paramount importance when it comes to online business. You need to create a balance of using RSS feeds and Search Engine Optimization effectively for your product. So the idea is to use all the avenues at disposal to track the traffic and build up on that. Once you have a steady readership, a strong mailing list, good in route into active forums, you are more or less done with the ground work and is now time to actually put the business plan in action.

Basics of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
July 31, 2008
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization is a step by step process in which a web site is optimized to the expectations of Search Engines.
What is the relevance of Search Engines in Internet Marketing?
Search Engines are the link between the customer and the product. They prioritise the websites according to their relevance to the key word searched and thus direct the stream of customers to different websites. Today studies show that almost 95% of the customers are finding their products using Search Engines which means a site which is not listed in a Search Engine or ranking low in a search engine is likely to get no customers at all.
What is the need of SEO?
SEO is most relevant for online sellers and service providers. The purpose of creating a web site is to get people visit it and to get customers. 95% of the customers are using Search Engines to find what they want. There may be a hundred or thousand websites dealing with the same topic in internet. The search pattern of customers shows that most of them refer only the first one or two pages while searching for a product. So if a website is not positioned in the first two pages of the Search Engine it is less likely to get any customers. This shows the importance of optimizing a web site. If a website is positioned in one of the first two pages of search results it can have lot of customers. The more the SERP (Search Engine Ranking position) you have the better.
How SEO is done?
Search Engine Optimization is a step by step procedure. The working of each Search Engine is based on a specially made algorithm which ranks web sites according to certain factors like keyword density, number of back links etc. In SEO theses qualities of websites are optimized so that the web site ranks better in search results. The first step to be done in optimizing a web site is Keyword Analysis ie, finding the right keyword for which the site is to be optimized. The keyword for a web site depends on many factors. It depends on the purpose of the web site, what the web site sell, the service it provides, the nature of its business etc. For example for a web site selling laptops the most appropriate keyword may be “buy laptops”. After analysing the keywords the second step is Competition Analysis. Here the competition for each keyword is analysed and the strategy of the competitors are found out. Consider the above example. In internet there are lakhs of websites selling laptops. So naturally the competition for this keyword “buy laptops” is pretty high. On seeing the strategy of the competitors who are already occupying the top positions in Search Engines one can calculate the work needed to improve his website’s ranking position. It is always better to know what your opponents are doing. After knowing this much one can start his works like link building, PPC advertisement, Content Optimization etc.
Cutting through the competition and getting high in the Search Engines is not an easy task. It takes time and effort. Only dedicated people can get good results through SEO. Seeing the vastness of its opportunities there are many companies dedicated for providing SEO services. Their services can be made available a any time. For a web site SEO is as important as its design and contents.

Public Speaking – Owning “The Skills” Part II
July 31, 2008
In order to present at the top, in order to acquire The Skills, you must remember three rules that govern everything you do whilst presenting. They’re really quite simple, but sometimes it’s easy to forget the simple things, and these rules must remain in the forefront of your consciousness at all times.
Rule Number 1 states: If you’re working too hard, you’re doing it wrong!
Rule #2: When you’re doing it right, it’s always Win-Win.
The sad truth is, typical speaker behaviors more often fall into the category of Lose-Lose. Whether it be the way the speaker engages the audience with his eyes, or what she does with her hands, or the pace with which either cranks out the word stream, most things that speakers do work both against their feeling comfortable and the audience’s ability to follow and buy into what is being said.
For instance, think about what you see presenters do with their arms and hands. Instead of using the opportunity to throw off excess energy by using the full swing of their arms and hands to paint pictures of the words they are saying, your average speaker locks them up in some position that not only keeps the excess energy trapped in a re-circulating loop, but in a position that translates to a body-language signal that is off-putting to the audience.
Luckily, as is the case with the other counter-productive behaviors in which speakers engage, these can all be changed simply by engaging in other, learnable behaviors that produce positive outcomes. You don’t need talent to do it right, you simply need to know how to do it right, and then practice those physical behaviors.
When you employ the behaviors that comprise The Skills, not only are you more relaxed, authoritative and convincing, but your audience has a much easier time hearing, seeing, and ultimately agreeing with the message you are trying to impart.
One thing to remember is that audiences, as Yale’s Professor Edward Tufte likes to point out, “are lazy, and audiences are fragile”. You can’t ask audiences to work in order to get your message because they won’t. And you can’t make them feel uncomfortable because they’ll spend their small amount of energy trying to get comfortable and won’t have anything left to spend on trying to comprehend your point.
Proper eye-contact, gesturing, tone, inflection and volume all work to make for a great experience for both speaker and listeners alike. When you’re using The Skills, it’s always a Win-Win.
Rule #3: People only START listening when you STOP talking.
This is an easy concept to understand, but a very difficult one for most people to implement. If you stop to think about it, you don’t so much hear what is being said as you do to what was just said.
In fact, the left hemisphere of your brain, where speech and text are processed, is programmed to not absorb information immediately, but rather put it through a process of analysis before storing or acting on it. It’s a momentary process to be sure, but nonetheless one that is immensely aided when a moment or two of silence follows the words or phrase that the speaker wants his audience to really hear and comprehend.
Think for a moment of what happens when someone tells a joke. Jokes are structured to get the listener thinking that the action in the setup will proceed along the expected path, and the humor comes when the listener realizes that the punch-line has altered that path in an unexpected way. But you don’t laugh at the moment the punch-line is delivered. You laugh only when you realize your line of thought has been diverted, and that always takes a moment, or sometimes, if the joke is really good, two. You only hear what was actually said when the joker stops talking and your mind has the opportunity to recognize the misdirection.
Of course, what most speakers do is continue with an endless stream of verbiage from the moment they open their mouths until they discover that the talk is over and they can (Thank God!) take their seats again. Once people start talking in front of a group it is very difficult to get them to stop, as it goes against what they’ve taught themselves to believe: that as long as they continue to hear words coming out of their mouths they’re still OK. A very common fear is that somehow that stream will stop and they won’t be able to get it started again. But why is this so?
A stitch in time
Because of the physiological changes that occur in the body when you are facing an audience, your perception of time actually s-l-o-w-s d-o-w-n. The universe doesn’t change - just how you perceive it. So although the audience is listening to you in real time, you perceive even a momentary lapse in your word-stream to be much longer that it actually is. A 1-second pause for the audience might feel like 3 or 4 to you.
This is where umm’s and ahh’s are born. We hear that dreaded silence, and in a desperate need to fill it immediately, we grab for the closest thing - a non-word that we don’t have to structure into our word track.
It might be hard to believe, but time goes by quite nicely even when it’s not filled with your words.
As you develop your eye and an ear for The Skills, you will come to see that ALL great speakers not only know Rule #3, but also embrace it. They not only embrace it, it is at the forefront of their thinking whenever they are speaking. It is the Number 1 issue on their minds. And that says a lot, because Rule #1 says that we can’t be thinking about too many things at once.
Being able to resist saying the next thing on your mind immediately after you offer your last thought is the most difficult idea for participants to learn, but it is an absolutely essential.

How to Set a Criteria For Internet Success!
July 31, 2008
If you have an internet business, and like me, you have an accident which impedes your ability to work for a while, you’ll find yourself with a lot of time to think.
If you are anything like me, you might decide to use that time to reflect on ways to improve your business. I did that, and was shocked to realize that I didn’t even know my business, because since I started, I had changed it almost every week.
Although I had years of previous business experience, this was my first foray on the internet. I was completely green and had no idea what kind of tools I would need I don’t think it even registered that I might need some tools. I certainly didn’t know where to go or how to find the information which I very quickly realized I was going to need. I did have an email address, which I left behind like a trail of cookies wherever I went.
Suggestions soon arrived in my email box along with tempting sales letters and ‘one time offers’. I tried different programs and systems, I even got my own domain, but what eluded me was a lot of basic information. I would start a new program, then, at some point I would get stuck in something, get frustrated and move on the next big thing.
Even today, somewhere, in the depth of my hard drive is a folder with dozens of programs, some of them still in the still in their original Zip files. I was going to study them ….one day. Now, I’m ashamed to think of it and I think it’ll be awhile before I muster the courage to find that folder.
But then, I got lucky. I fell down some stairs and broke my wrist. That slowed me down and it kept me off the computer for quite a few weeks. To my great surprise, the accident turned out to be a blessing. My forced detachment from the computer meant I wasn’t able to do anything for a couple of months. So I had to sit around and just read and THINK. I thought a lot about my business or, lack of, and tried to figure out what I was doing wrong.
I tend to adopt a ‘can do’ attitude and jump in head first. This is not a helpful personality trait when your knowledge is limited. My approach even caused me to get banned by Google before I had a chance to launch my first PPC ad. Why? Well, the training, which came with a very complicated program, confused me and caused me to make more than a few mistakes with the ads. So I figured, as the ads were no good, I’d cancel them before they were launched, and then just start over, fresh.
Little did I know that nothing is ever canceled in Google. It simply hangs around, like a bad smell, sending out negative odors to Google, who soon followed the scent to tell me that my ads didn’t measure up to Google standards. I knew that! That’s why they were canceled.
Of course, Google was right, I was totally green, but had I been given some easier instructions, it would never have happened. I finally canceled that program, and for once, I got my money back, but it was a big blow to my ego and cost me a lot of valuable time. On reflection though, it’s probably fair to say that my ban saved me a heap of money in Google ads.
About a month ago, I was finally able to go back on the internet, for short periods of time, mostly to read and to practice my one finger typing. What really excited me then was to realize that there was now a fundamental change in my approach to my business. During all that free time, I had formulated a criteria which set out how to select any program to buy. So I started to look for a program that could fit, and yes, I said A program, just one, but it had to meet the criteria.
It works like this: For me to buy a program, it has to meet these conditions.
I want a system that I can be proud to recommend to my own family and friends.
It must be easy to understand and make sense to anyone, even to someone not involved on the internet.
The program must include the necessary tools along with an easy to understand, step by step training program for setting up and operating the system.
Under no circumstances can I add an additional new program unless it will enhance or benefit the function of the program I already had.
The program must be flexible and have more than one source of income.
And, by necessity, it must be very cheap.
The program must not be subscription based. To me, subscription programs will eventually cause a financial, terminal decease, and in the end, they’ll kill your credit. That’s because all those little, seemingly reasonable, monthly subscriptions, will finally add up to your monthly income.
This criteria has proved to be the best thing I have done so far. It’s kept me in check, because it forces me to rethink my actions. These days it takes me a couple of weeks to make a decision to buy something.
So did I end up with a program to suit my criteria? The answer is yes, and believe it or not, it turned out to be free. It has everything I want, including multiple, passive streams of income, but I doubt I would have found it, if my accident hadn’t forced me to stop and reflect on what is important to my business and my success.
I strongly urge anyone, who hasn’t done it before, to develop their own criteria. It will keep you focused and protect you from costly, rash decisions. A critical part of the criteria should include a budget, based on your income and debt ratio, with a non-negotiable cap on the maximum you can spend on any product or service.
If you are interested to learn what I finally chose as the right program for me, it may surprise you! It certainly did me! You’ll find a link below. http://thespiderwebsystem.com/trilink2002
Data Entry Jobs at Home - Design for the Future Office
July 31, 2008
The growing popularity of the opportunity to complete data entry jobs at home indicates this may be a design trend for the office of the future.
Many firms and professional organizations are seeing the benefits to the corporate office of contracting for data entry jobs at home. The company saves on training time and job turnover rates are much lower. There are usually savings for the company in job benefits such as vacation and sick leave costs. The company that does not have to provide expansive office space for the workers saves on overhead costs as well. The stay at home workers also benefit in many ways, both economically and in terms of job satisfaction. Completing home based data entry jobs is likely to play a much more significant role in the work force of the future.
Transportation
When more people are doing work such as data entry jobs at home, everyone benefits. There is less of a strain on the nation’s aging transportation system so that commuting become less stress producing for those who are unable to make the transition to work at home positions. The supply of precious oil will go farther. For the individuals who are making the job transition, the expenses related to transportation costs will drop dramatically in most cases. Fuel costs will be nearly eliminated, you may be able to get by with one vehicle instead of two. Public transportation may be a legitimate option for your entire family.
Energy usage
For the business, allowing workers to do data entry jobs at home will reduce the usage of energy at the corporate site. Workers at homes will be able to reduce the overall cost of energy consumption because they are not expending fuel to get to work. Other energy savings can be made by the business when they do not need to heat or cool so much space for the use of workers. The business may actually be able to eliminate some of the cost of constructing and maintaining buildings at the work site.
Time Management
The benefits of better use of time when the practice is to do data entry jobs at home will reflect both on the individual and on the business. The time spent in working instead of traveling to and from work is an obvious benefit for both the worker and the business or organization that provides the work. When you work at home, there are other benefits related to time management as well. You can plan errand trips to avoid traffic tie-ups and crowded periods during the day. You can work during the hours when you are most productive mentally.
Job Satisfaction
For many home based business workers the best part of doing data entry jobs at home is the sense of job satisfaction that is achieved by being in charge of your own schedule and work tasks. If being in charge of your own destiny is important to your sense of well being, working at a job where you set the limits both in terms of time, money and type of work can make ‘going to work’ a pleasure rather than a responsibility or a duty.

Work at Home – Top Reasons Why You Should Start Now
July 31, 2008
Making the decision to work at home is something that may not be high on a priority list for many people. Yet, with the increasing cost of fuel and accessibility of internet work opportunities, it is certain to become more appealing to many.
Before making the decision to work at home, there are many aspects of the choice that should be considered. Ultimately, the decision will be a personal one, based on your income needs, working environment, personality and home environment. You must consider each element carefully to determine whether you are ready to take the big step from office worker to home-business entrepreneur. Before making the change, speak to people who have done it. Find as much information as possible by searching online and take an honest look at your financial, physical and emotional needs. Here are a few factors that may help you in your decision.
Save Time
If commuting time and preparing for a daily trek to the office is a major consideration for you, you may be swayed by that factor alone. There is little disagreement that walking from your living room to your home office space takes less time and effort than a 20 mile commute through suburban and city traffic, even if you manage to car pool. When you work at home you gain minutes to hours of commuting time every day to be used in more enjoyable pursuits. Additional time may be used to earn even more income, but it doesn’t have to be all work and no play when you have a home based business.
Save Money
When you work at home, you will definitely save money. This may be money that you had not even realized you were spending just for the privilege of working outside the home. For example if you buy lunch at work that is an expense. Even a cup of coffee costs more is purchased at a cafe or coffee shop. Perhaps your clothing that you wear at work must be dry-cleaned instead of tossed in a washing machine. You may rely on more expensive fast foods or prepackaged meals simply because you have less time to cook.
Earn Income
Unquestionably, when you work at home, you will be able to earn an adequate income to meet your financial needs. If you are creative and a self-starter, you will find ways to improve the flow of revenue into your household. Remember, spend able income in your household has two components. Money coming in and money going out. Whatever the reason for deciding to start your own home based business, you can make a successful transition if you are determined to make the change.
Gain Job Satisfaction
Often, people make the decision to work at home for money, quality time or change of lifestyle reasons, but find that the enjoyment comes from the increased job satisfaction of being your own boss. You can set your work and play times; you can gain more effect on the lives of your youngsters and you can take time to develop other interests that make you a more rounded person. Background on Search Engine Marketing
July 31, 2008
Wondering where it all began? You don’t have to wonder any more. Take a look at the history of search engine marketing in this article.
As you probably already know, search engine marketing is big business today and if you’re an Internet marketer it’s definitely something you should be involved in. Before you jump in, however, you might be interested in learning more about this newest and increasingly popular method of connecting with new customers.
Search Engine Marketing History
As more web sites began to be added to the Internet, people started relying more and more on search engines to help them find what they needed. Most of those search engines didn’t charge anything to list web sites but then pay per click engines were introduced around 1996 as a way to fund the engines and to give Internet marketers an early way to boost their rankings. The first pay per click service was Overture and it was purchased about five years ago by Yahoo who still uses its basic idea as part of their paid search engine marketing service. Later, Google AdWords became an even more popular but similar service for Internet marketers.
During these early years, this strategy didn’t have a name. Then in 2001, Danny Sullivan who was the editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land developed the name “search engine marketing.”
The good news is that search engine marketing is becoming more popular than ever. Between 2002 and 2006, the budgets for this method of marketing have increased across the board by 750%. That’s even though this form of marketing is also one of the most affordable. In fact, all advertisers in North America in 2006 combined spent more than $9 billion on search engine marketing.
Search Engine Marketing and You
Now that you understand a little more about search engine marketing’s history, you may be starting to wonder how you can begin using this method to advertise your own company.
First, you need to establish your keywords. These are critical to the success of your marketing efforts. Choose at least a dozen words and use them as the focus of your marketing campaigns. Make sure these words have a good search volume.
Second, bid on how much you will spend per click for each of these keywords and fund your account at one or more of the most popular pay per click search engine marketing services, such as Google Adwords. The more you agree to pay per click the higher you will rank but you may also deplete your account faster. Try to find a balance that will maximize your traffic and minimize your expenses. Use trial and error to find that balance.
Third, make sure you provide a high-quality landing page at the other end of that link. The landing page should grab the individual’s attention and make them want to click-thru to learn more about your product or service. Make sure your landing page is easy to navigate and that your content is informative and persuasive.
By following all of these steps and paying careful attention to the results of your efforts, you should begin to see your search engine marketing efforts pay off in the form of higher traffic and bigger revenue numbers.
